Clumsy — awkward steps across the hall — Childlike stomps beyond the wall.
My heart skips a beat.
Is it you? Are you home?
Stealth — I meld with the shadows — I limber lithely behind the arch.
Eager to surprise you with my smile.
Are you near? Is it your footsteps I hear?
Shouts — call out your name — voice cracks through the silence.
We melt into each other’s arms.
My child is home.

The em-dash gives this a breathless feel that works well with the hiding and excitement. And, of course, it’s such a joyful ending.

I’m so glad your prodigal is back, Alison – is it Ellen? My Ellen will be here on Saturday morning with my grandson, Lucas. I have them until Monday and I know time is going to fly.
I love the way you built up the excitement through the dashes and question marks, and then the lovely climax of:
‘We melt into each other’s arms.
My child is home.’

Love it… the use of em-dashes works so well. In my mind I thought how it would look with ellipses instead, but I think that would work better with a less happy end… somehow the dashes gives it a strength and hope that leads to fulfillment in the end.

Maybe a moment of hesitation? I think it worked very well and enjoyed it!

There is no other feeling like it – a mother’s heart waits and cherishes.
